> WASTED TIME ART GALLERY - Joplin
Housed in one of the few remaining Joplin single-story storefronts with old South overhang, at 1617 S. Main in Joplin (417.659.8463) I met the painter, muralist and silversmith BRYAN FLOCK ~ who also co-publishes, with LANCE ALLEN, Joplin's free arts and culture newspaper THE CURRENT, ETC, and writes music articles for them.

The gallery was as full of visual energy as was the artist who got going with the gallery about 3 years ago, after studying fine art at MSSU here in town. There's a lot to see. The person and place is full of life about the future of the arts in this region and the area's potential contribution to aesthetic dialogue throughout America.

> JOPLIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE and ART!
Becoming a new member of the JACC I learned at this morning's orientation meeting that this amazingly active (and nationally accredited, by the way) organization has two standing committees where art might be involved with enhancing the visual look and feel of our town.

VISION 2020 - implementing recommendations of the Vision Joplin master plan for all sectors including arts and culture.

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT - improving the appearance of residential, business and public areas "... that encourage Joplin community beautification and asethetic preservation..."

I'll be getting involved with Community Enhancement for starters, and am very excited about the possibilities and role visual art might chance to play from time to time.

> WHAT IS THE VALUE OF THE ARTS TO JOPLIN'S ECONOMIC HEALTH?
Being, as I have long been, an unabashed if not a vociferous champion of regionalism, in early July this year I found myself registering for an online forum sponsored by the Joplin Globe newspaper, entitled HEY MARTHA!, being flown around cyber space by something called "Groupee". Essentially, it is a more or less typical dialogue forum for internet talkers having opinions about everything involving local headlines and international news du jour, and it appears to be something made available to the smaller town news audiences throughout America.

On July 17th I posted a poll for voting and discussion, using the title shown above that begins this submittal to Arthobs. Ten days later there had been 79 recorded "views" of the poll, and 3 responses, two of which were my own. Now, on August 9th, there have been 216 "views" and 4 responses, 3 of which are mine. Things are definitely looking up!

What this means, probably, is that the poll is viewed (though not taken) by an average of 10 people daily! It is unlikely that anyone would view the poll twice, seemingly. But even if so, 10 people caring enough to click on that thread, per day, in this region, represents a significant interest in the topic. I am encouraged.

> SHOW ME THE OZARKS Magazine
Now celebrating its 5th year of publication, this great magazine features business and culture-related stories and the entire gamut of Ozark news for the Four-State area of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas... which is the precise regional area VAA intends to serve.
Based in Joplin and published/edited by the very dedicated Ms. Lee Radcliff SHOW ME THE OZARKS is unashamedly a booster for local economic development... just what is needed to enhance our financial and social circumstances. What I enjoy most about the magazine is that it touches upon so many facets of regional interests and people, with a colorful first class publication chock FULL of information and useful leads to events and individuals.

> ARTIST IN RESIDENCE OPPORTUNITY
Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska offers thirty-eight (!!!) 2-8 week long residencies between January and June next year for visual artists, writers and composers, in a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired facility; free housing and studio, internet access and $100 weekly stipend. This is a wonderful opportunity, as are a number of other residency programs, which VAA has ALWAYS urged artists to apply for, regularly. The value of these programs is having clear time away from the demands of ordinary existence to just do some work, and to associate with artists of other discplines... VAA artists who have done these are almost always extremely glad they did.

> NATIONAL GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE
The National Governor's Association meeting in Charleston, SC the week of August 7-11, will be addressed on Monday by the J. Paul Getty Trust on the specific topic of the economic value and role played in America by the arts and humanties, with special emphasis on sustaining the place of art throughout our entire educational system (while so many are doing everything in their power to turn us into a nation of Engineers and Mathematicians.)

> ISADORA'S WONDERFUL THINGS ~ (Joplin bead art)
Came across a magnificently quiet small business by the above name, at 3021 S. Main (must park behind store); introduced to it by Robin Wampler.
They have a fantastic coffee and health food bar (slow vs fast food), open M-F 0800-1800 hrs, and Sat 1000-1700 hrs... good prices and superior food (with healthful eating conversation if so desired).
About 50% of the space is occupied with practically every kind of supply imaginable for beadwork... plus it looks like they have bead classes on site too. Some of the regulars have been decorating a full size female mannequin, covering it entirely with commemorative beaded designs dedicated to cancer survivors... it will be shown around town after it gets finished, by the looks of it quite soon.
Great place, great people, great food, great genuine coffee. That's where I would go when I was looking for a walking cuppa Joe of a morning.
